The Formartine and Buchan Way
This route is simple to follow as it is on an old railway line and is suitable for cyclists of all abilities. There are access points to the route at all the towns and villages mentioned below, so the route can be done in stages if preferred.
The Formartine and Buchan Way starts in Dyce at the far end of the rail station carpark and travels north going past the villages of Newmachar and Udny Station and then onto the largest town on the route, Ellon. From here it travels on towards the small village of Auchnagatt before arriving at the small town of Maud.
At Maud you have a choice of two routes of either heading north to Fraserburgh or east to Peterhead. Towards Fraserburgh you’ll pass through Strichen and then around Lonmay. However, please note that there is currently a section between Maud and Brucklay Bridge that is unsurfaced and so there is a diversion in place using the B9106 and A950. The diversion is on public road and so is unsuitable for inexperienced cyclists and young children.
If you decide to head towards Peterhead, you’ll pass Old Deer, travel through Mintlaw and pass by Longside.
