East Lothian Loop
From Brunstane Station follow the well signed route of National Route 1 to Newcraighall and onto Musselburgh passing the Queen Margaret University. Follow National Route 1 through Musselburgh to the River Esk Path and follow the signs to Whitecraig. Continue on National Route 1 for two miles and take the green-signed local route for the Pencaitland Railway Path. Follow these signs for the next 1.5 miles, through Smeaton Shaw Farm, turning left at the top of the steep hill, to the traffic lights at Crossgatehall. Take the A6124 for half a mile before turning left onto the minor road and up the steep hill to Cousland.
Follow the minor road straight out of Cousland for three miles to a T-junction where you’ll turn right onto another minor road for 1 mile to the junction with the A6093. Here, turn left and follow this road for 1 mile before turning right onto the B6371 signed for Humbie. After approximately 5 miles turn left at the T-junction with the B6368, which is opposite the Humbie War Memorial, and follow the road all the way to the Saw Mill at Petersmuir. Turn left here onto a minor road signed for East Salton.
Cycle through East Salton joining the B6355 signed for Pencaitland. In Pencaitland, cross the A6093 keeping on the B6355 signed for Tranent. Cycle down the busy main street of Tranent, go over the mini roundabout and turn left at the Cross Keys Pub onto the B6414. Stay on this road through the village of Elphinstone to Crossgatehall, where you rejoin the earlier section of the route.
