Chester to Connah’s Quay

Chester is a most attractive town full of half-timbered buildings. The town is ringed by medieval walls with fragments dating back to Saxon and even Roman times. Opposite the centre is the site of the Roman amphitheatre and Roman archaeological finds, as well as displays on local history, can be seen at the Grosvenor Museum.

There is a cyclepath along the towpath of the Shopshire Union Canal that links the centre of town to the railway path, an attractive open ride taking you from the north side of Chester out into the Wirral’s rich arable farmlands, planted with potatoes, maize and cereal crops.

The Mickle Trafford to Dee Marsh railway line once carried steel to and from the steelworks on the banks of the Dee at Hawarden Bridge. Away in the distance are the Clwyd Hills. At Hawarden Bridge you may wish to try the alternative return route to Chester by following the excellent trail alongside the River Dee (Regional Route 89) back into the centre of town.
